nothing and there are also no meetings even planned regarding the debt ceiling and the inevitable issue that is are faced by those who need to make the decisions for us. >> yeah. we have got this triple deadline coming up. and nobody -- everybody says they don't want to do it at the last minute the way we did with the fiscal cliff but nobody seems to be talking about it yet. you don't have negotiations started. granted we are in a bit of a holding pattern with the inauguration coming up and maybe things start to happen after that but nobody seems to be jumping in proactively for a solution to these issues that are coming up and that's because they're tough decisions. they're hard. and nobody has something that is universally palatable ready to off offer. >> with that said, will we see a separation of spending cuts the republicans say they want to desperately and separate it from the debt ceiling? as the president said, you can't run out on a meal you have eaten. this is not new debt. this is bills we have acquired. the government and this country must be obligated to do the same. >> wel

. i mean, i think it would be, frankly, another disaster if republicans try to use the debt ceiling, to force dollar-for-dollar budget reductions. i don't see that as a winner for them, and i can't imagine at least the party establishment is now seeing that as a potential winner for them. i mean, you know, face it. the president won the election. and he laid out a program and a philosophy, and he won the election on it. and i think as long as republicans are going to take the stance that he didn't win and that, in fact, they won and therefore they get to do things their way, i don't think -- i don't see how that's going to help them get out of that 14% hole. >> eugene, nbc.com had a very interesting way of putting it this morning, a very nice tag which is that what the electorate is looking for right now is not so much hope but a president who can cope. it's all about coping, not so much hoping. do you think that this kind of poll suggests that he is going to be able to deliver on that message of coping? >> well, you know, first of all, i think that's right. i think that, you know,

a little mini cave on the debt ceiling, and it looks like they are going to be willing to extend the debt ceiling for three months with which is the cover of the new york times this morning, and what is that about? what is happening? >> well, it seems they are trying to line up their opposition to the president, this debt ceiling trying to line it up with two other big economic situations that we are going to be faced, that is to continue resolution that we common call the c.r. to keep the government running which expires the first of march. and then of course, we have the so-called, i don't know what to call it, but it is not the cliff, but it is not what i would call it. >> the curb. >> yes, the curb beginning to kick in, and we need to work with that and i think that they are trying to line it up to camouflage whatever they may do, which i think will be to vote to let the debt ceiling go up. >> okay. so i should not see this as we say in the black church, a "come to jesus" moment, but in washington they say we are outmanned on this, so we will have to give the president his way, becaus
